What a day.
First, I want to begin this post by
thanking every single member of the WomenNC team—from Beth to Lois to Jane to
all the board members and speaking coaches who have encouraged, challenged, and
supported all of us throughout this process. It’s unbelievable to think that
I’m in New York City right now, surrounded by my incredible peers, trying to
process the events of the day.
Today, after walking through the
United Nations completely slack-jawed, obtaining our grounds passes, and
stopping for a quick bite to eat, we returned to the hotel to mediate on
several very important questions—questions we will continue to think about and
return to throughout the week. These questions include very broad, sometimes
personal inquisitions: What do you want to learn from CSW? What is your plan of
action? What do you hope to take back to your community and North Carolina from
this trip? How is this beginning, rather than the end, of a journey? Throughout
the week, I’m sure we will all continue to mull these topics over in our minds.
Tomorrow, we will be attending an
all-day Consultation Event, to become better acquainted with the UN CSW 59, the
Beijing Platform for Action, and the mission of CSW. I cannot wait to really
get a chance to get my feet wet networking, and also become a true expert about
CSW and this incredible event.
Until tomorrow,
Justine
Can't wait to hear what you learn about reproductive rights around the world!
ReplyDeleteThe question, "how is this the beginning and not the end of journey?" is strikingly accurate in how special of an opportunity you have. You're stepping into an international arena and gaining a whole new perspective on your research interests. This is the beginning of something powerful that can help shape the rest of your life - soak it up, Justine! :)
ReplyDeleteDitto Katie's comments. I can just imagine you walking through the UN in awe, Justine. It is a special place, with real potential to help people collaborate to change the world. And you can be a part of that in a very positive and personal way. This is indeed the beginning of what is likely to be life-changing for you and the other Fellows. Soak it in!
