CSW First Day - Alison Blog #8

After an early start (we enjoyed seeing the sunrise as we waited in RDU for our departing flight), the WomenNC CSW 2015 crew successfully registered at the UN building and we’re all in full preparation mode for the CSW conference. Even today, I’ve learned more about CSW and its role through the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action. For example, I learned that 50% of women worldwide are in paid employment, and at this current rate it will take 81 years for women to achieve parity in employment. I also learned more about the role of governments at the CSW—tomorrow at Consultation Day I hope I can continue to learn more about the role of NGOs. Specifically, I hope I can learn more about what I can do as a young person to positively influence government policy!

Beth shared with all of us this great interview with Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, the executive director of UN Women, about the continued lack of gender equality.  Happy early International Women’s Day to all and I look forward to celebrating through Consultation Day and the March for Gender Equality and Women’s Rights.

Thank you so much to all of the WomenNC board, advisors and mentors (especially Maureen Rooney, my mentor!) for the many hours you've put in the past six+ months to make this amazing week possible! We all appreciate this more than you know and will try to honor your hard work while here representing North Carolina at the CSW59.

  1. Happy International Women's Day! You are such an important participant in CSW because you're representing the rising leaders in your field. CSW presenters and players appreciate student participants and do not hesitate to engage in conversations with people from all levels of the organizational chart and status - they want to hear from you as a younger person!

  2. Love the happy photo you have attached. And by the end of the week, you may be even more excited, but probably a bit overwhelmed with it all, and ready for some full nights of sleep! Glad you will be able to investigate your potential role in government. Maybe you can be the ONE to shorten that 81 years to achieve parity in employment! Stay engaged and confident! Keep smiling! Just beautiful.
