Day 1

IT’S HERE – we’re finally in New York, embarking on this adventure we’ve been working towards for the last six months. Our first day here was spectacular, but exhausting. From waking up at 4:00 this morning to make it to the airport on time, to exploring the UN and eating lunch at a deli in Manhattan, to taking the subway to Brooklyn so we could sift through items at a flea market, to hanging out at the hotel and discussing our plans and expectations for the next few days: today was jam packed. Tomorrow will be equally busy, I think, as we attend the NGO Consultation day and dinner afterwards.

What I’m most looking forward to is the sessions themselves. I’m particularly interested in mental health and queer activism, so I’m squeezing in as many of those sorts of sessions as I can – but I’m also excited to attend plenaries on other topics with which I’m less familiar, like reproductive justice and women in the media.  I can’t wait to meet activists and policy makers with similar interests, and hope to forge connections with people who are doing the sort of work that I hope to be doing myself, someday.

I want to extend an enormous thank you to everyone at WomenNC who has helped make this experience possible, from board members to mentors and everyone in between. A special thank you to Lois for our gloves and scarves – you’ve made our experience here both warmer and more stylish!

Here’s to an amazing week!
