UN CSW Day 3

Today at CSW, I went to an event hosted by a South African organization working to end GBV in South Africa. There was a panelist of people from multiple countries in Africa, including South Africa, Nigeria, Malawi, and the Democratic Republic of Congo talking about gender based violence in an African context and how to strengthen legislation addressing gender based violence. Another event I went to was about ending gender based violence in schools. Hosted by UNICEF, the panel discussed mechanisms for strengthening school attendance and retention all around the world through a gender inclusive lens. There was one of the ministers of education from the Ivory Coast there who spoke about the mechanisms the Ivory Coast was implementing to make schools more accessible and safer for all students but particularly girls. The last event I went to was by a Nigerian organization called Championing for Change that was sponsored by Ipas that gave leadership and organizational training and funding to local organizations in Nigeria dedicated to reproductive rights, maternal and infant healthcare.

I'm excited for what the rest of the week has in store and I'm very excited to do our presentations tomorrow.

  1. IMO, equitable education and a healthy environment (food, water, air, health) are the two most basic needs to achieve women's equality through all the other methods: political leadership, freedom from violence, etc. etc. Sounds like those on the panel from Africa are working on this in a good productive way. Good focus.
