Hello, my name is Africa Coardes. I am a junior social work major at Bennett College for Women in Greensboro, NC. I am excited about being a WomenNC CSW Scholar because I am looking forward to implementing research under Dr. Valerie Johnson concerning women rights. I have been looking for ways to get involved in research during my matriculation at Bennett and I am ecstatic about finally having the opportunity to do so. My group will provide research on perinatal care for incarcerated women in both Guilford and Forsyth County. By the end of the program I hope to be transformed from a scholar into an independent researcher. I will use this opportunity as a stepping stone as I hope to participate in more research in the future. As an aspiring social worker I am also looking forward to acquiring more leadership training and advocacy skills.

A lifetime Opportunity - Hopes and Goals

Hello,  my name is Patience Mukurazhizha Bowora.  I am a junior Social Work Major at Bennett College for Women in Greensboro, North Carolina.  Was Born in Zimbabwe, seasoned in England and matured in the United States, I believe that if I can change one person's life, the Would be a better place. Great passion in helping people especially the disadvantaged like women, children, the handicapped, and refugees.   Currently enrolled, Social Work Major to learn the values, principles, and standards to guide decision making and professional conduct, to make a difference in someone’s life. Through Dr. Valerie Johnson (V.J) of Bennett College, I am part of the group that is going to research on Perinatal Care For incarcerated women in Guilford and Forsyth Counties.  I am looking forward to learning new ideas, working young talented ladies, making friends, changing lives and much much more. I wish to impact other women to improve the quality of their lives, in terms of relationships, employment, social life, and building self-confidence.  My end goal is to start an NGO project to work with women and children. I am honored to be part of WomenNC and hope to learn a lot through networking and to be equipped to help myself and other women understand who we are collectively. I also need to understand my individual role. The visit to the UN should change many aspects of my life and take me to the next level.  I am so grateful for the opportunities to serve.

What I hope to gain from being apart of this CSW program experience and training for law school, graduate school, and for my career as President of the United States. I am excited to see what we uncover from our topic about Pregnant women incarcerated, especially considering we are in a election year this is something that I feel would motivate me to continue to advocate for change in the prison system but at a different angle. I am looking forward to improving my research skills and making an impact in the view of congressmen and women with these results.

               

             Furthermore, I believe this will help with my training for law school because it is going to help me prepare for extensive research, reading, writing, and presentation of founding’s. I also believe that this research is something that I may be able to use in the court room later on in life as a defense attorney. Secondly, since I plan on doing a dual program in Public Administration and Law I believe that this will again help me with learning how to properly organize papers and doing extensive research. Lastly, I believe this will help me when I become President of the United States because it will help me develop new ways to tackle this issue once I am in politics so that I can properly influence policy as it regards the prison system, which is something that I plan on tackling hard as President of The United States.

Secondly, I am excited to see what me research group and I will uncover. This is a conversation that is not talked about a lot. I believe that if we work hard enough to uncover the truth it can possibly reach the right people and spark a nationwide conversation like the Black Lives Matter movement. I think that this conversation is just as important because it is dealing with the life of two human beings at once and possible hurting the life of one before it even starts. I hope that this research can possibly spark a change in the system and policy over all.

Lastly, I am looking forward to improving my research skills. While I have taken a number of writing courses I also feel like since I am working towards becoming a lawyer I can always be improving my skills. One of my biggest regrets is not doing a double major or minor in English. I think this will give me more practice in the skills of writing that will hopefully make me more competitive to my peers in the classroom and in the work field. I also hope that this research is done so thoroughly that it forces Congressmen and women to look and consider change.

In Conclusion, I am very excited to see the outcome of this research. I believe that it has the possibility to change the world and change the lives of myself and the people I plan on defending in the court room.

Moving back into the triangle after time away is hard. Don’t misunderstand me, I’m all for some sweet tea and North Carolina barbecue, but after a year away, participating in human rights advocacy and nongovernmental organization’s efforts to end structural inequality, school and my previous activities felt somewhat unfulfilling. I struggled to integrate my passion for equitable change and human rights into my daily activities, and it was this conflict that the encouraged me to apply for WomenNC’s Juanita M. Bryant UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) Leadership Training Program

The unique opportunity to design and carry out independent women’s human rights research with mentorship and leadership training allows me to explore my specific interests and desire to create positive change in my local community, while growing into a more effective change-agent through guidance and mentorship. I have chosen to study the status of immigrant women in the triangle, because I have witnessed the consequences of the global migrant crisis first hand while working at a UNHCR camp in Greece. More recently my work with immigrant communities in the Triangle has led me to believe the challenges immigrant women face do not end with immigration.

I hope to gain independence, research skills, and confidence in public speaking through the program, as well as develop relationships with professionals, community members, activist, and government officials in the Triangle. I have never been to the United Nations and am looking forward to visiting and presenting my research. I hope to be an excellent representative of WomenNC and my school, UNC Chapel Hill, throughout this experience. I am also very excited to grow with my cohort of scholars, share this experience with them, and have engaging discussions centering around women’s issues in my community. It should an exciting year!
